As its name suggests (“Joven” means “young”), this Rioja should be enjoyed soon. It offers a good consistency and ruby red color, as well as a respectable complexity on the nose. Starting with a mix of berries and plum, the wine’s smell quickly begins to drift towards spices, including some pepper, vanilla, and– most notably– chocolate. Alongside the chocolate, we smell mushrooms and, eventually, the faintest touch of eucalyptus, as well.
The wine’s smooth mouthfeel is accentuated by a healthy sapidity (minerality/saltiness) on the palate. Though it is a little light on tannins– not surprising given the name, and that it’s not intended to age much– its alcohol and acid are both moderate.
Overall, the wine is medium-bodied and decently balanced from a tactile perspective, though a bit weak on the intensity and persistence of taste (and offers a slightly bitter finish). It would be best enjoyed with sausage, grilled meats, or a simple mixed rice dish.
