2024 Paso Wine Fest Recap
Excellent Paso Robles wine, passionate winemakers, and perfect weather... What more could you ask for?
The 2024 Paso Wine Fest was a delightful experience for those interested in exploring the rolling hills of California’s Central Coast. Wine lovers of all backgrounds gathered for the the Paso Wine Alliance’s weekend-long event. The festival featured more than one hundred wineries pouring exceptional Paso wines, along with many other experiences for guests to enjoy. We left the grand tasting, which featured good food, great wine, and perfect weather, even more impressed with the region than we already were before.
The Grand Tasting Event
Perhaps most surprising about the festival’s grand tasting on May 18th was the extensive availability of high-quality wines, many of which retail well into the triple digits. (The most expensive wine we tasted retails for $175!) The sheer number of such high-value wines made the seemingly pricey festival ticket well worth the cost of entry, even for guests who could only make it to a few booths.
Although the nearby barbeques did sometimes make seriously tasting wine more difficult, the food options were extensive and delicious. The VIP section of the festival featured an all you can eat fresh oyster bar (our favorite VIP perk!). In the main festival area, guests quickly formed a line for servings of expertly grilled wagyu steak— a perfect pairing with the region’s big red wines.
Additionally, attendees had the chance to take part in a number of other fun and unique experiences, as well. The most unique exhibit was undoubtedly Daou’s whimsical hedge maze, filled with fairytale-like characters pouring wine. Many other producers offered gorgeous picnic areas in which guests could relax, enjoy their wine and the beautiful, breezy weather.
Meanwhile, the booths of the smallest producers offered an intimate and personal tasting experience. In many cases, the winemakers (wo)manned the booths themselves, their passion for the region and the craft self-evident. Our favorite part of the festival was perhaps the chance to meet such enthusiastic and skilled winemakers, ask questions, and learn unique details about Paso Robles wine.
Besides the well-known Bordeaux and Rhone varietals grown in Paso, there was also a diverse range of varieties to try. We explored many new, impressive wines including Gewurtztraminer from Bianchi Winery, Counoise from Adelaida Vineyards, and a Malbec Rose from Bon Niche.
BEST VALUE WINES under $30
Ultimately, however, we were on the hunt for the best value wines we could find. Likewise, we were interested in wines that have wide-enough distribution to be easily accessible for most people looking to purchase them. (Interestingly enough, small producers with limited distribution make up the majority of Paso producers. This fact makes finding the sweet spot between accessibility, affordability, and quality sometimes more difficult for this region!)
More specifically, we searched for wines that retail for around $30 or less and were pleasantly surprised at the quality we discovered. A few of our favorites are shown below:
All in all, if you didn’t get to attend the event this year, we definitely recommend planning a trip for the 2025 Paso Wine Fest! When you get there, be sure to spend some time in downtown Paso Robles, which offers delicious restaurants and numerous tasting rooms of nearby wineries (so you don’t have to panic about visiting every single booth at the festival!).
